CHAMPAIGN — The Vandalia Community High School wrestling team gained lots of experience and competed against some of the top teams in the state at the St. Thomas More New Year's Challenge.
The two-day tournament featured 36 teams, with more than half of Class 1A's ranked teams in attendance. The event also featured 10 of the top 20 state-ranked teams.
There were six pools, which featured round-robin action. Vandalia went 4-0 in their pool last Monday. The Vandals then went 2-3 in duals on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Vandalia finished 12th in the final team standings. The team is now 13-5 in duals.
Vandalia 45, St. Joe Ogden 22
Trevor Philpot (106), Ryne Lipsey (126) and Jake Stewart (182) all won by fall, while Jarrett Paslay (113), Chaston Womack (120) and Bobby Bradley (195) won decisions for the Vandals. Luke Tessman (132), Kendrick Woolsey (220) and Nick Trible (285) won by forfeit.
Vandalia 66, Seneca 9
Paslay, Womack, Lipsey, Tessman, Garret Stewart (138), Dalton Blankenship (160), Jake Stewart and Bradley all won matches by fall. Philpot, Woolsey and Trible won their matches by forfeit, as the Vandals won every match except two in the dual.
Vandalia 51, Monmouth-Roseville 27
Philpot, Paslay, Womack, Lipsey, Adam Palmer (145), Blankenship, Kolten Kaiser (160), Jake Stewart and Woolsey all won matches by fall.
Vandalia 52, Clifton Central 30
Paslay, Womack, Lipsey, Palmer, Jake Stewart and Woolsey all earned pins. Blankenship and Bradley won their matches by tech fall, 15-0 and 17-1, respectively. Philpot won by forfeit.
Vandalia 53, U-High 7
Philpot won by fall, while Paslay, Lipsey, Kaiser, Bradley and Dalton Whitten won by forfeit. Womack, Cody Phillips, Jake Stewart and Woolsey all earned wins by decision. Blankenship won by tech fall, 16-0. Woolsey won by an 11-1 decision.
Coal City 48, Vandalia 27
Lipsey, Blankenship, Jake Stewart and Bradley won by fall. Womack earned a win by decision. Coal City won four matches by fall and also earned two wins by forfeit.
Vandalia 38, Roxana 33
Palmer pinned his opponent and Womack won by tech fall, 16-0. Paslay, Kaiser, Garret Stewart and Blankenship won by forfeit. Bradley earned a 7-5 decision. Jake Stewart lost due to an injury default.
Auburn 45, Vandalia 29
Womack and Bradley won by fall, while Philpot and Woolsey both won by forfeit. Lipsey earned a tech fall, 17-2. Auburn strung together seven-straight wins during the dual, winning at 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170 and 182. Blankenship lost a 4-2 decision and Palmer lost by injury default. Paslay lost, 9-7, in overtime.
Wilmington 47, Vandalia 27
Philpot and Paslay won by fall. Womack won by forfeit. Logan Sullens (126), Blankenship and Woolsey won decisions. Bradley lost, 2-1, and Lipsey suffered a loss by fall. Wilmington is ranked third in 1A.
Note: Lipsey recorded his 100th career win at the event. The Vandals were scheduled to compete at home on Wednesday.
