VHT Day Three: Flora, Greenville will meet for championship

In the recent history of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, Flora has found its way to the championship game time and time again.
This year is no different.
Bryce Pearce made five of six free throws with under a minute to play, and Flora edged defending champion St. Anthony, 55-50, on Monday night.
The win puts the Wolves in the title game, while the Bulldogs had to settle for the third-place game.
It's the fifth trip to the title game in six years for the Wolves, who always seem to find a way to the title game.
"We've been in the championship game here now five times in six years, so we're fortunate and blessed to be doing what we're doing," Flora Coach Phil Leib said. "So often we take things for granted, and we're truly blessed to be coaching at Flora. The kids played well. They responded well tonight."
A senior guard, Pearce scored 27 points in the contest, making five three-pointers. Jefrey Gocey added 11 points, Ian Leib had nine and Logan Smith and Chris Scott added four points apiece.

All of them were huge in this one.
"Many times, other teams get so focused on stopping Pearce, and rightfully so, he's an awesome player," Leib said. "But I thought our supporting guys really played well and they all came up big for us."
St. Anthony got 13 points from Kyle Hartke and 12 from Derek Rios.
Flora led 12-2 before the defending champs regrouped. By the time the first quarter ended, Flora was up, 17-14. An intense second period came to a close with Flora clinging to a 28-26 advantage.
St. Anthony pulled ahead in the third period, but it was close the rest of the way. The game was tied at 39 entering the fourth quarter.
The game was tied at 50 with a minute to play when Pearce hit two free throws. St. Anthony turned the ball over, but Flora's Smith missed two foul shots. The Bulldogs took a time-out to set up a play. But St. Anthony missed from point-blank range inside and had to foul. Pearce hit one of two for a 53-50 lead with 13 seconds to go. St. Anthony then turned it over again. Pearce then hit both shots at the line with 3.8 seconds left to seal the win.
Greenville defeated Flora, 70-59, earlier this season. The rematch Tuesday night will be for the VHT crown.
"Greenville's awful good," Leib said. "Coach (Todd) Cantrill does an awesome job. We played them about a month ago, so hopefully we'll fare better this time."

Greenville 62, Pana 42
Greenville is right where they wanted to be.
The No. 1 seed at the event, the Comets advanced to the tourney title game with a convincing 62-42 win over Pana on Monday night.
Greenville has never won the VHT, but they'll get their shot on Tuesday night.
Pana hung tough early, and Greenville led, 16-12, after one quarter.
The Comets extended their lead in the second period with a solid inside-outside game. Two late three-pointers pushed Greenville's advantage to 36-20 by halftime.
Greenville continued to impose its will on Pana in the third period, as the Comets got several hoops inside to take a 49-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Panthers continued to battle until the end, but Greenville's lead was never in jeopardy late in the game.
Jacob Hall erupted for 24 points and six rebounds for the Comets. Craig Faulkner added 10 and David Holder scored nine.
Blake Stauder scored 10 for Pana, which ended up in the ninth-place game.
