Area roundup: Hahn leads South Central girls to victory

COWDEN — Abby Hahn put on a show in the season-opener.
A sophomore guard, Hahn scored a career-high 30 points in the first game of the season as the South Central Lady Cougars knocked off Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 44-35, on Monday night in girls basketball action.
"The girls played hard tonight to pick up a win in our first game of the year," South Central Coach Gary Kapper said. "We moved the ball pretty well and were patient in our offense for the most part. We just need to get more aggressive in attacking the basket when we can."
Hahn scored 17 points in the first half as the Lady Cougars took the lead right away. South Central led, 7-0, in the first period. By the end of the first quarter, the Cougars were up, 14-4. The Lady Hornets got back into the game with a 9-9 second quarter.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City outscored South Central, 22-21, in the second half, but the Cougars held on for the win.
"Defensively, we did OK, but we have things to work on to get better," Kapper said. "We were aggressive rebounding tonight. It's always good to get the first game over to see what we have to work on. We will work to improve."
Hahn made 10 field goals, with two three-pointers. She also hit eight of 10 foul shots for 30 points.
Keely Smith scored seven points for South Central, while Alannah Sigrist added five points and Sidney Wilkins added two points.
"Sidney did a good job of setting up and running our offense," Kapper said.
Jensyn Morrison scored 14 points to lead CHBC.
South Central (1-0) is at North Clay on Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
