Lady Vandals place sixth at Mattoon Holiday Tourney

The Lady Vandals last Saturday took sixth at the Mattoon Holiday Tournament.
After going 1-2 in pool play and winning a play-in game against MacArthur, the Lady Vandals lost an overtime contest to St. Anthony, 45-40, in the fifth-place game.
The teams played even basketball for the entire game, but St. Anthony took advantage of several free throws in the extra period to earn the win.
Senior Morgan Cripe – an all-tournament selection – led Vandalia with 13 points and eight rebounds, and freshman Emma Meyer added 11 points.
Other scorers for Vandalia were: sophomore Madelyn Hosick, 6; senior Randi Evans, 3; sophomore Karlie Bright, 2; senior Brandy Protz, 2; senior Kylie Sellers, 2; and sophomore Makayla Tinker, 1.
The Lady Vandals are 3-11.

In the play-in game last Friday night, the Lady Vandals defeated MacArthur, 70-47.
Cripe’s 13 points paced Vandalia, which also got double-digit scoring from Meyer (11), Evans (10) and Tinker (10).
Vandalia scored 38 points in the first half to build a 15-point lead, and that would grow throughout the second half, with 20 points in the third period and 12 in the fourth.
Other scorers were: Bright, 8; senior Kaitlyn Kershaw, 8; Hosick, 7; and Sellers, 3.

In the final game of pool play, Vandalia pushed past Cumberland, 73-25.
The overmatched Lady Pirates surrendered 31 points in the opening period, and the Lady Vandals held a 51-17 lead at halftime.
All but one player scored, with Meyer’s 13 points leading the way. Also in double figures were Tinker (11) and Cripe (10). Junior Kelsey Swain had a career-high eight points.
Vandalia picked off several passes during the game, with Cripe grabbing five steals, and Meyer and Tinker picking off four passes each.
Tinker had a team-high six rebounds, while Hosick and Kershaw added five.
Other scorers for Vandalia were: Evans, 9; Kershaw, 7; Hosick, 6; Bright, 4; Sellers, 4; and Leah Francis, 2.

On day one, Vandalia fell to Mattoon, 58-51, in overtime, with missed free throws and turnovers hurting the team at the end of regulation in last Thursday’s game.
Mattoon sank four 3-pointers in the final period to help erase the two-point lead Vandalia held going into the last eight minutes.
Cripe had a double-double, with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Vandals, and Bright added 11 points.
Other scorers were: Tinker, 8; Meyer, 6; Sellers, 6; Kershaw, 5; and Hosick, 4.

In the second game, tournament newcomer Galesburg had little trouble beating Vandalia, taking a 58-43 victory.
The Lady Vandals struggled with turnovers (20) and gave up 19 offensive rebounds, while also shooting just 8-for-21 at the free-throw line.
Tinker paced the team with nine points and six rebounds, and Cripe and Hosick each scored eight.
Vandalia made just four field goals in the first half, falling behind, 28-14, at halftime against a very strong Galesburg squad.
Other scorers: Meyer, 6; Bright, 5; Sellers, 4; and Evans, 3.
