Man recovering from attack by bear
A rural Beecher City man is recovering in a St. Louis hospital from injuries sustained when he was attacked by a bear that he had raised.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reported on Monday that the “unprovoked attack” on a 64-year-old had occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The man, Marion Julius, was initially airlifted to St. John’s Hospital and was later airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
He reportedly had been bitten on an arm and sustained a broken hip and leg. The sheriff’s office said that Julius had raised the bear for nine years.
Julius is licensed by federal authorities to house the bear and other animals – including bison, goats, llamas, a yak, a water buffalo and an alpaca – on Julius Acres.
He reportedly has passed a federal inspection at the end of May.
