President Flo Allen opened the meeting, with all giving the pledge of allegiance.
Debbie Boley was called into the meeting, and she was presented with an “Ode to Debbie Boley, Our Office Secretary, a Real GEM (goes the extra mile).”
Written by Panzi Blackwell and signed by all the board members present, it read:
You always go the extra mile, and always with a cheerful smile, always friendly, gracious and sweet, a friendly “Hello” whenever we meet. Conscientious in your duties, professional, but also a friend, always willing to give others a needed helping hand. A great office secretary, to that we will attest, as a friend to Fayette County HCE, you are No. 1, the best. Thank you for your kindness from the members of the Fayette County Home and Community Education Board.”
An “Ode to Jo Stine, our IAHCE Community Worker/SNAP Ed” was given to Boley to give to Stine, who wasn’t present.
It also was written by Blackwell and signed by all the board members present and it read:
We appreciate your interest in our Fayette County HCE and your visits to the sites of the Summer Lunches for Kids (free). We appreciate your friendliness and your support in what we do and your understanding of our goals, whether they are old or new. So please accept this token of thanks and know it is sincere and true, the Fayette County HCE Board appreciates all you do.
International Chairman Shirley Klitzing reminded everyone of the International Night potluck and program that will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the St. Elmo Phillips Building at 6 p.m.; registration will start at 5:30 p.m.
The program on Indonesia will be given by Dona Strullmyer of Altamont.

All HCE units in the county are reminded that the Pennies for Friendship collection has to be sent to Dorothy Harpster, HCE county treasurer, by Nov. 1. Some units collect pennies during the year, some of the units send a $1 per member for Pennies for Friendship.
Units that want to participate in the project of giving Christmas cards to the military need to have them at the Oct. 22 Board meeting. Cards are to be signed by a first name only, and only the cards, no envelopes, are to be given to the board. They will be boxed to send together to a military address.
Another project Units may want to do—all national brand coupons (no store coupons) are being collected to send overseas—the coupons can expire here, but if the expiration date is not more than four months, they will be accepted. They will be sent to an overseas military base for families to us.
Blackwell had a centerpiece of a pumpkin holding a flower arrangement. There were several plates of mini cream puffs and at each place, a Mounds candy bar wrapped in a wrapper that said “Join HCE for Mounds of Fun.”
