Man charged with stabbing appears in court
A Shobonier man who was arrested last month for allegedly injuring two men with a knife at a Vandalia bar is facing 10 counts of criminal offenses.
Carl H.M. Sprague, 24, made his first appearance in court after being charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of armed violence, four counts of aggravated battery and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
Sprague was charged in information filed by Fayette County State’s Attorney Stephen Friedel on July 13, a little more than he was arrested by Vandalia Police after allegedly stabbing one man and cutting another.
A preliminary hearing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 for Sprague, who has been held in the Illinois Department of Corrections on a parole violation since his arrest.
At Monday’s hearing, Associate Judge Allan Lolie of Shelbyville appointed Fayette County Public Defender Ed Potter to represent Sprague.
Upon being appointed, Potter asked that Sprague be housed at the Fayette County Jail, to allow him to communicate with his client, but Lolie denied that motion.
According to Vandalia Police Department reports, officers were called to the area of Cages at 215 S. Third St. at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 17, for a report of a disturbance.
Vandalia officers took Sprague into custody on tickets for aggravated battery, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and armed violence.
Sprague was initially taken to Fayette County Jail, but then turned over to IDOC officials.
In February 2006, Sprague was sentenced to six months in prison on a charge of receiving/possessing/selling stolen property.
His probation was revoked in February 2007, and in November 2008, he was sentenced to five years in prison as a result of subsequent probation revocations.
