Monday’s shooting is termed a suicide

Authorities now believe that a gunshot that killed a man in Shobonier on Monday was self-inflicted.
A female contacted the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office on Monday afternoon, reported that someone had shot themself at a rural Shobonier residence.
Shortly before 6 p.m., a county deputy found a man identified as Michael Brown, 27, of Henry, dead on the front steps of that residence.
Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen, who pronounced Brown dead at 6:18 p.m., reported that the longtime Vandalia area resident had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
As an investigation into Brown’s death was continuing,  an autopsy was conducted on Tuesday at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Bowen reported on Tuesday evening that as a result of the investigation, he determined that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
He said the investigation revealed that Brown had been sitting on the front steps of the rural Shobonier home with a friend.
Bowen said that the friend went into the home to retrieve an item, and heard a gunshot while inside.
He said the friend then went back outside and found Brown lying on the steps.
