Wayne G. Schmitt, 90, Vandalia

Wayne Gerald Schmitt, 90, of Vandalia, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care in Vandalia. He was ushered into Heaven on Father’s Day, surrounded by all seven of his children, numerous grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at First Pentecostal Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Daniel McDonald officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: First Pentecostal Church, Sarah Bush Lincoln Land Hospice or Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care.

Mr. Schmitt was born on March 7, 1922, in Shobonier, the son of Joseph and Lula Theimann Schmitt. He married Aileen June Brown on December 29, 1946, in Vandalia. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage together and raised seven children.

He was the owner of Wayne Schmitt Construction. His legacy will live on through many of the residential and commercial structures he built in Vandalia and surrounding areas. He was a member of First Pentecostal Church and served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his children, Ronald Schmitt and his wife Debra, Dennis Schmitt and his wife Carol, Diana Cole, and Marcie and her husband Tom McCarty, all of Vandalia, Richard Schmitt and his wife Bambi of Manhattan, KS; Terri and her husband Larry Hoehne of Poteau, Okla., and Patti and husband Randy Engel of Farina; sister, Pauline Crye of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren Stacie and Ronnie Raines, Sarah and Matt Vincent, Darrell and Charlotte Cearlock, Nicholas and Michelle Smith, Zachary and Ida Cole, Joshua and Jennifer Schmitt, Benjamin Schmitt, Jami and Lyndell McCallister, Jamey and Jason Ruot, Jeremiah Schmitt and Sabrina, Tyler Schmitt, Timothy Schmitt, Ann and Richard Gates, Andrew Hoehne and Viktoria Boldis, Chris and Trista Hoehne, Melissa and Donald Sanders, Rachel Engel, Emily and Kristofer Reynolds, Megan McCarty and Dana McCarty; great-grandchildren, Kirkland Bates, Madison Bates, Natalie Cearlock, Cora Cearlock, Drew Vincent, Johnny Raines, Nessa Raines, Amanda, Neil, Adrianna, Nicholas and Taryn Smith, Shardaney and Kenisha Moore, Machai Cole, Qolel Cole, Natalie, Peyton and Lainey Schmitt, Cotey McCallister, Corey McCallister, Emily Potts, Mikayla, Carson and Camden Ruot, Preston Schmitt, Kira Schmitt, Emily Gates, Zack Gates, Kaylie Gates, Zada Reynolds and Zander Reynolds; and great-great- grandchildren, Brandon Moore, Ari Moore, Westley Bowen, Bailey Bowen, Z’kiyah Smith, Kayleigh Smith, Jaden Krever, Kaylin Krever and Olivia Potts.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen; parents; and nine siblings.
