Local Modern Woodmen fix landscaping at caboose
Members of the local chapter of the Modern Woodmen of America recently helped beautify downtown Vandalia by planting flowers and spreading mulch in the flower beds around the Little Red Caboose in the municipal parking lot at the intersection of Fifth and Johnson streets.
The project was part of the organization’s Good Neighbors Program, a nationwide program that gives Modern Woodmen chapters $500 for hands-on repair and community beautification projects. Nearly 500 such projects are undertaken each year.
“As a member-based, fraternal organization, Modern Woodmen strives to give member families opportunities to volunteer and enhance their communities,” said Barb Oberlink, local Modern Woodmen activities coordinator. “Our Good Neighbors Program does both.”
As a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society, Modern Woodmen sells life insurance, annuity and investment products, not to benefit its stockholders but to improve the quality of life of its stakeholders – members, their families and their communities. That is accomplished through social, charitable and volunteer activities. Each year, Modern Woodmen members volunteer nearly 1 million hours for community projects nationwide.
Participating in the local project were: Barb and Dan Oberlink, Natalie Oberlink, Mary Cripe, Sharon Oberlink and Penny Richards.
