Memorial Day observances

Local veterans organizations will honor those who died while serving in the military with programs on Monday.
Vandalia
Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 will hold its Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. at the Legion Home, located at 321 S. Seventh St.
Speakers will include Tony Flowers, a Vandalia resident who was an Army captain and a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, and ET3 Marion Mayfield, a local resident currently serving in the Navy aboard the USS Texas, a Virginia Class nuclear submarine. Refreshments will be served after the program.
Brownstown
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9770 of Brownstown will hold its annual Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial Wall in Brownstown Central Park.
The program will include patriotic speeches and music.
Speakers will include: David McDevitt, Honor Flight Board of Directors member; Dan Fruitiger, Post No. 9770 commander; Donnie Smail of Post 9770; and Voice of Democracy Contest winners Haley Sarchet and Ashley Lakin.
Refreshments will be served after the program
Walk Across America
The 10th annual Walk Across America, held to show local support for this country’s troops, will be held at 1 p.m.
Participants will walk from the Vandalia Statehouse to the American Legion Home at Seventh and Johnson streets.
The walk is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie and Auxiliary 3901, Helm DUI Services and Brownstown VFW Post 9770.

St. Elmo
? The St. Elmo American Legion Post will hold a Memorial Day program at 1:30 p.m. at the Veterans' Memorial next to the Phillips Building on U.S. Route 40.
