Charles ‘Charlie’ Washburn, 77, Vandalia

Charles “Charlie” Washburn, 77, of Vandalia, died at 12:35 a.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Claude Howell officiating. Burial will be in McInturff Cemetery in Hagarstown. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday and one hour before services on Tuesday, both at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Washburn was born on Aug. 10, 1934, in Vandalia, the son of Virgil and Helen Ireland Washburn. He married Mary Ann Smith on Dec. 23, 1967, in Moweaqua; she died on Dec. 10, 2000. He married Eugenia “Jeannie” Rose White on Oct. 23, 2011, at Evergreen Christian Church in Salem.

He was the owner and operator of Washburn Enterprises, and was a member of Evergreen Christian Church in Salem and Operating Engineers Local 520 of Granite City.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Robin and her husband James Ferrie of Vandalia, Tammy Guffey of Vandalia, and Tracy and her husband Leland Hord of West Liberty; son, Gary Washburn and his wife Clarissa of Ramsey; stepdaughter, Brenda and her husband Les Sullens of Vernon; stepson, Chris White and his wife Belinda of Iuka; sister, Rosalie Hart of Villa Grove; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann; brother, Marvin Washburn; stepdaughter, Bonnie White; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
