ANNOUNCEMENTS
Wednesday, Aug. 10
• The Avena Township Park Board will meet at 7 p.m. in the St. Elmo Community Park Centennial Building.

• The St. Elmo District Board of Education will have a special board meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the district office.
Thursday, Aug. 11
• The Lunch Bunch will meet at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
• The Post-Polio Survivors and Friends of East Central Illinois will meet at 5 p.m. in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Education Center, Mattoon. A portion of the meeting time will be planning to celebrate the “We’re Still Here” Event that has been held annually in October and is spearheaded by the Polio Health International group out of St. Louis. If unable to attend, you can join by telephone – call a toll-free number, 800-300-2164, and when asked for a pin number, enter 4337. You can take part in the discussion.
• The St. Elmo District Library Board will meet at 7 p.m. in the St. Elmo Public Library.
• Friendship Quilt Club has changed its monthly meetings to the second Thursdays. It will meet at 7 p.m. in the St. Elmo Public Library.
• The Effingham Chapter #110 Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Effingham Masonic Temple.
Monday, Aug. 15
• The Historical Vandalia Inc. Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Fayette County Museum, Vandalia.
• The St. Elmo District Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the district office.
Tuesday, Aug. 16
• The St. Elmo Educational Foundation will have its annual meeting at 7 p.m. in the St. Elmo CUSD #202 District Office. The meeting will include the election of directors and officers, and a discussion on fundraising activities and accomplishments.
A membership in the Educational Foundation is $20 per year for an individual member, $20 a year for a family member and $20 a year for a business member.
All contributions, including membership fees, are tax-deductible.
Those wishing to join can send their name, address and phone number and a check made to the St. Elmo Educational Foundation to the St. Elmo Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 82, St. Elmo, Ill. 62458.
Thursday, Aug. 18
• Vit-Em-In Class potluck will be held at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church.
Future Events
• The Owen-Miller Reunion will be held at noon on Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Good Old Days Banquet Center, Brownstown. All family and friends are invited.
 • A community consignment auction, sponsored by the Avena Township Park Board to help with the park and swimming pool, will be held in the St. Elmo Community Park behind the swimming pool at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.
Accepted for the auction are cars, trucks, mowers, etc., with clothing not accepted.

Special Exhibits at the Fayette County Museum
The special exhibits in the Fayette County Museum for August are Indian Artifacts and Old School Items.
The museum welcomed 225 visitors during July. A group from the Taylorville Christian Church toured the museum.
The Fayette County Museum has announced this season of entertainment. The events are all historical.
The “Fall of the Sparrows:  Reverend Frances Springer and His Boatload of Orphans” will be presented by William Furry, executive director of the Illinois State Historical Society, on Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Vandalia First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
This will recount the fateful journey of several Civil War orphans in the winter of 1865 from Fort Smith, Ark., to Central Illinois.
“The Koenig Family During World War II” will be presented by Jerry Koenig of Chesterfield, Mo., on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Vandalia First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Koenig will describe the conditions Jewish families faced during World War II and how his family survived.
“The Illinois 103th Infantry During the Civil War” will be presented by Kevin Kaegy of Greenville on Jan. 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the Vandalia First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Kaegy will recount the formation of the Illinois 130th Infantry at Greenville in 1862 and its travel to Camp Butler, Vicksburg and much more.
Additional information, season tickets and single event tickets are available at the Fayette County Museum at 301 W. Main St. in Vandalia or by calling the museum at 283-4866.
The museum’s hours are 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays.
Countryside Disposal Notice
The Countryside Disposal, Inc. of Brownstown sent a notice letter to all customers telling that, effective Aug. 1, the business will not accept ashes of any kind.
The letter, by the company president, Ed McConaughay, stated, “Recently a customer placed hot ashes in a dumpster. Once inside the truck a fire started. Seven tons of garbage were ejected onto a county road in an effort to save the truck.
“The fire department was called to put out the flames. Then a massive cleanup was conducted. We are not going to do that again. Any customer who disposes of ashes will have their service terminated. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.”
Friendly Neighbors
A small group was present for the Friendly Neighbors potluck held at noon on Aug. 2 in the Phillips Building.
They were Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown and Jim and Erma Budlove, Cora Miley, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, Marjorie Sarver, and R. W. and Mary Smith, all of St. Elmo.
Following the meal, Rosemary Owen read a 10 Commandments article, and Mary Smith read an article written by an 8-year-old boy on God.
Wright’s Corner HCE
Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education ate lunch at the Effingham Cracker Barrel on Aug. 3.
Those who attended were Ina Abendroth, Carol Austin, Janice Garrison, Kate Jennings, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, Una Tish and Mary Smith, and guests Larry Reed, Delano Tish and R. W. Smith. They had no program, but enjoyed visiting.
Friendship Manor
Something different in August at the Friendship Manor Nursing Home – watermelon is served at 2:30 p.m. each Wednesday. Homemade ice cream is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29. The salad bar for August will be at noon on Thursday, Aug. 25.
Weather permitting, courtyard visits are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 9, and Thursday, Aug. 4, 18 and 25.
The resident council is set for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
Pianist Pee Wee Denton is scheduled for 2 p.m. this Thursday and the Singing Strings on Thursday, Aug. 25.
August birthdays for residents are: Aug. 3 for Doris Haslett and Nina Oertwig; Aug. 7 for Jay Welker, Aug. 11 for Harold Hall, Aug. 15 for Annabelle Shelton and Aug. 29 for Don Hall.
Employees birthdays are the following:  Mindy Noll, Aug. 3; Michael Boggs, Aug. 5; Florina Finley, Aug. 6; Mary Jo Allen, Aug. 12; Vanessa Baker, Aug. 19; Stacie Mitchell, Aug. 20; Michael Kramer, Aug. 21; and Tiffany McDonald, Aug. 30. The monthly birthday party will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m.
