Three members of family get jail time

Three members of a Vandalia family who were taken into custody in January after the body of a Tower Hill man was found in their home were given jail time after pleading guilty last week.
Of the three, Michael B. Cyrus, 28, received the stiffest sentence, 9½ years in prison. Sally J. Cyrus, 55, was given 120 days in jail, and William F. Cyrus, 31, was sentenced to 104 days in jail.
Michael Cyrus was sentenced to seven years in prison on a charge of possessing methamphetamine materials, and was given an additional 2½ years after his probation for a 2007 charge of unlawful acquisition of a controlled substance was revoked.
Possession of methamphetamine materials is a Class 2 felony punishable by up to seven years in prison, or up to 14 years for individuals eligible for extended terms.
Sally Cyrus pleaded guilty to unlawful use of property, a Class 2 felony, and concealment of a homicidal death, a Class 3 felony punishable by up to five years in prison. She was placed on probation for four years.
The charge of unlawful use of property alleged that Cyrus allowed her home at 1909 Arrow Drive “to help bring about a violation of the Methamphetamine Control and Community Protection Act.”
The charge of concealment of a homicidal death alleged that Cyrus knowingly concealed the death of James Mundy, “who died as a result of a drug overdose.”
William Cyrus pleaded guilty to concealment of a homicidal death. In addition to the jail sentence, Cyrus was placed on probation for 30 months.
The Cyruses were arrested on methamphetamine charges on Jan. 22 after police officers discovered the body of Mundy in a bedroom of the home.
The body had been placed between the box springs and mattress of a bed, which was lined with pillows and blankets.
It was later determined that Mundy had died from a drug overdose, and Fayette County State’s Attorney Stephen Friedel said Mundy had died from a high quantity of methamphetamine.
Friedel said that Michael Cyrus received the most severe punishment because it had been determined that he was the “most criminally culpable.”
Vandalia police officers searched the Cyrus home after Mundy’s family members had reported him missing. Mundy’s car was at the Cyrus residence.
Sally and William Cyrus were taken into custody on meth charges, and Michael Cyrus was already in the Fayette County Jail on drug charges.
Charges alleging concealment of a drug-induced homicide were later filed in the case.
