ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thursday, July 21
• Vit-Em-In Sunday school class potluck, 6 p.m., First United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

• The city parks and recreation meeting will be held at 8 p.m. at the Phillips building. The agenda main topic is Deken Park softball diamond B. Concerned citizens are requested to attend the meeting.
Saturday, July 23
• Open house at the St. Elmo Christian Church for the 90th birthday of Marge Watson (it was March 4) and the 80th birthday of Max Watson (it will be Sept. 12). All friends and relatives are invited.
Monday, July 25
• St. Elmo/Brownstown junior high softball practice will start at Deken Park, from 9-11 a.m. All girls from St. Elmo or Brownstown entering the seventh or eighth grade is eligible to play. Students will need a current physical before they can participate. If you have questions, you can call Megan Burrus at 217-821-3798 or St. Elmo Junior/Senior High School at 829-3227.
• The Fayette County Home and Community Education Board meeting, 10 a.m., Vandalia Extension Office. Following the board meeting, the first vice chairman of each unit (or a representative of the unit) is to meet with the county first vice president to work on program planning.
• The St. Elmo Lions Club, 6 p.m., Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
• The St. Elmo Board of Education. 7:30 p.m., unit office.
Tuesday, July 26
• St. Elmo Masonic Lodge #769, 7:30 p.m., Masonic Temple.
Wednesday, July 27
• Royal Neighbors of America #5784, 1 p.m., Phillips Building. The RNA is collecting school supplies that need to be taken to the meeting.
Thursday, July 28
• Exxon/Mobil Annuitants, noon, Vandalia Ponderosa.
Lions Club
July is an anniversary month for four St. Elmo Lions Club members – Richard Lowe, 17 years; Lewis Crawford, 16 years; Mark Lash, 10 years; and Charles Moore, three years.
President Bob Wells recognized the members at the July 11 meeting held at Mary Ann’s Restaurant. Wells led the Pledge of Allegiance at 6 p.m., and Pee Wee Denton gave the meal blessing.
The Labor Day parade was discussed in further detail, including early registration, categories, possible themes and parade marshals.
“Made in America” was suggested as this year’s theme. The categories will mostly be the same as last year. Early registration of $2 will end on Aug. 31, with the collection point to be announced. Registration on parade day will be $5.
In addition to the six mentioned, those present included Don Crawford, John Crawford, Roger Fulk, Bob Lowe,  Le Mar Marchman, Dave Maxey, Dee Newberry, Rex Reeder, Lloyd Stanley and Randy Wolf.
American Legion
A short business meeting was held by the American Legion Post #420 the evening of July 12 at the Legion Home. They accepted the bid of a contractor to do the foundation for the building the Legion is going to build next to the Legion Home. The building will hold all of the handicap equipment the Legion has for loan/rent.
Those present were Charles Bosomworth, John Crawford, Xon Hanna, Clement Lilly and R.W. Smith.
Friendship Quilt Club
The Friendship Quilt Club changed its July meeting from the second Tuesday to the third Tuesday, July 19. It will be held at the St. Elmo Public Library at 7 p.m. There will be a speaker for a special program.
Lunch Bunch
Ten were present for the July 14 meeting of the Lunch Bunch held at Mary Ann’s Restaurant at noon. They were Gene and Avis Clark of Salem, Pat Porter of Farina, Sue Pollack of St. James, Wayne and Sandra Lovett of Brownstown, and Karen Denning, Mark and Jennie Ann Heischmidt, and Marge Pippin of St. Elmo.
Library District Board
On July 6, after approving the minutes of the June 9 regular and June 25, 29 and 30 emergency meetings and paying the bills, the board of the St. Elmo Public Library District voted to rescind the motion from June 25 establishing a $35,000 line of credit at the Fayette County Bank.
Tom McCarty spoke to the board about bonds for board members and other types of insurance the library district might wish to have. He will get costs to present to the board.
The grants will continue to be completed. The board voted to transfer $15,000 of the tax anticipation warrant funds to the checking account.
At 9 p.m., the meeting was recessed until July 14. At that meeting, the board decided to buy a Labor Day ad from SEBA, have Betty and Jim Bolds clean at St. Elmo and Beecher City, subscribe to The Leader-Union for Brownstown, get a new mailbox for Beecher City and complete the charged sales application for Dollar General.
Next, they adopted a tax levy resolution for building and maintenance purposes.
Kathy Spitler is to talk to the Fayette County Bank about getting online access to the checking account. The board voted to accept Culbertson’s bid to repair the heating and air conditioning unit for $500.
In August, the librarians plan to have a bag sale for books.
