Mrs. Brugoto was born on Dec. 10, 1933, at home in St. Elmo, into a family of three siblings, the daughter of Orville Leighton and Ruby Katherine Atkins-Cook. She married Donald Dean Brugoto on June 28, 1950, at the Fayette County Courthouse in Vandalia.
Emma Sue was born, reared and educated in the St. Elmo area, and lived there her entire life. Emma Sue kept very busy; she was a homemaker for many years, but she had other jobs and enjoyments. In the early years of her marriage, she was the ticket girl at the local theater, which her husband Don managed. She began making cakes in 1962. Making cakes was something she loved doing; she loved pleasing her customers with what they had imagined. When her children were older, she also took on several different positions throughout the years. People might remember her years at the local restaurants, the years she served children their lunches at St. Elmo Grade School or her years at Lutheran Care Center and Friendship Manor of St. Elmo. She delighted in her work with seniors. Emma Sue enjoyed hobbies such as game playing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She was a member of the New Horizons Non-Denominational Church in St. Elmo, Illinois and the Altamont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7676 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Gary Dean Brugoto and his wife Debbie of Carriere, Miss., and Jerry Alan Brugoto of Brownstown; daughter, Donna Sue and her husband Mick Rouleau of Altamont; grandchildren, Trisha Lynn Brugoto of Rayne, La., Niki and her husband Nathan Huckstadt of St. Joseph, and Blake Aaron Hooker; great-grandchildren, Jack Marcel Morris of Rayne, La., and Amelia Brooke Huckstadt of St. Joseph; sister, Mary Lou Collins of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; sister-in-law, Katherine Cook of Farmington, N.M.; and several friends in the St. Elmo area.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Franklin Cook; and brother-in-law, Elza Collins.
