Visit loved one during nursing home week

Editor:
This year’s National Nursing Home Week begins this Sunday – on Mother’s Day.
Each year, it is a special week for nursing home residents and their families to celebrate nursing facility life with facility staff and volunteers.
This year’s theme – “Fulfilling the Promise” – provides us all with a terrific reminder of our promise to always care for the seniors in our community.
National Nursing Home Week is a perfect time to visit your loved ones, friends and neighbors at facilities across the region. When was the last time you took time to reach out and let someone very special know that you are thinking about them? If you are unable to visit, why not make a phone call, send a card, flowers or even an e-mail? You’ll be glad you did when your special attention makes someone’s day.
Nursing homes will be hosting special events designed to enrich the relationships, and celebrate the ties between residents, youth, community members, families and staff. Many events are open to the public.
If you are not a regular visitor, you might find the brochure, “Tips on Visiting Friends and Relatives,” helpful. It covers such things as planning for the visit, visits outside the facility and who should visit. This brochure is available free by calling 1-800-628-8140, or at www.LongTermCareLiving.com.
