ANNOUNCEMENTS
Wednesday, April 13
• The Avena Township Park Board will meet at 7 p.m. in the St. Elmo Community Park Centennial Building.

Thursday, April 14
• Fayette County Home and Community Education Annual Get Acquainted Day will be held at the Brownstown Golden Years building. Registration is 9 a.m. The potluck brunch will be served at 9:30 a.m.
After the meal, the program will be given by Susie Koberesky of Highland who will talk about and display Southern women’s role in the Civil War; she will wear various types of vintage clothing. Following the speaker, there will be a “Make It, Bake It, Sew It, Grow It” auction, and those attending are asked to take items for the auction to help with the annual budget.
HCE members are encouraged to take guests.
• The Lunch Bunch will meet at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant. They are reminded to take a wrapped April Fool’s gift.
• Post-Polio Survivors and Friends of East Central Illinois will meet at 5 p.m. in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Educational Center, Mattoon.
• The St. Elmo District Library Board will meet at 7 p.m. at the St. Elmo Public Library.
• Effingham Chapter #110 Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Effingham Masonic Temple.
Saturday, April 16
• The Clothes Closet will have to close at the end of April. Clothes are selling for a dollar a bag from 9 a.m.-noon each Saturday.
Sunday, April 17
• Palm Sunday.
• The Wolf Creek Cluster of United Methodist Churches Lenten service, 4 p.m., Asbury United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jeff Van Dyke of the Altamont First United Methodist Church will be the speaker.
Monday, April 18
• The Historical Vandalia Inc. Board will meet at 6:3o p.m. at the Fayette County Museum, Vandalia.
• The St. Elmo Board of Education, 7:30 p.m., unit office.
Tuesday, April 19
• Passover.
Thursday, April 21
• The Vit-Em-In Sunday School Class will have a potluck at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church.
Future Event
• The annual Fayette County School Children Art Show will be held April 21-25. It is sponsored by Artworks Gallery and will be held in the exhibit area above the Fayette County Museum at 301 W. Main St., Vandalia. Hours are 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. and 1-4 p.m. on most Sundays.
CCW
St. Mary’s Council of Catholic Women met the evening of April 5 in the church parish hall. Roll call was answered with “What is your favorite ice cream?”
Announcement was made of the Effingham Deanery meeting to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in the big room at the Effingham St. Anthony Church. A thank you note was read from the Deanery ladies for St. Elmo CCW hosting the March 10 Deanery meeting.
Cards were signed for the sick of the parish.
Easter will be observed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Saturday, April 23.
The ladies of the parish Mother/Daughter Banquet will be held on Tuesday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m., in the parish hall.
It will be a potluck, with beverages and table service provided.
The Saturday, May 14, Mass will include First Communion.
On Saturday, June 11, after Mass, there will be a Father’s Day and graduation celebration, and there will be a potluck.
Hostesses for the April meeting, Lucille Koeberlein and Loretta Heischmidt, had an Easter theme on the serving table that held a ceramic Easter basket, Easter napkins, cherry delight, Easter candy, mixed nuts, coffee and tea.
Karen Denning won the Easter basket centerpiece as the door prize. In addition to Koeberlein, Heischmidt and Denning, those present were Libby Kessel, LaVonne Kramer, Pat Porter, Ann Rowland and Carol Rine.
Obituary
DaVonne “Dee” Dugger Roberts, 52, daughter of the late Rev. Ellis H. and Elsie Long Dugger, died March 16, 2011, at her home in Pleasant View, Tenn.
It was her second bout with breast cancer. A memorial service was held March 20 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View.
Her father was a member of the United Methodist Southern Illinois Conference, serving churches in Ramsey and St. Elmo, along with others.
Dee was once elected president of the Southern Illinois Conference United Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Condolences may be sent to her husband, Bruce Roberts  at 5024 Katie Lane, Pleasant View, Tenn. 37146; her brother, Dr. David E. Dugger, 19106 E. K Hwy., Nevada, Mo., 64772; her sister, Dr. Donna E. Dugger Wadsworth, 137 Westchester Drive, Lafayette, La., 70505.
Friendly Neighbors
Three real floral bouquets carried out the Easter theme of the Friendly Neighbors table decorations for April 5 at the Phillips Building.
After the pledge of allegiance, Bob Owen gave the blessing for the potluck meal. After the meal there was a short business meeting. For a short program, Margie Sarver gave a reading.
In addition to Owen and Sarver, those present were Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown and Joanne Owen, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, R. W. and Mary Smith, and a guest, Lois Stoneburner.
Wright’s Corner HCE
Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education met the afternoon of April 6 at the Loudon Town House. After the pledge of allegiance, roll call was answered with “One new item I need for my wardrobe.”
Unit members will make tray favors for the Easter breakfast at the nursing homes.
Helen Wright gave the special feature, “Exercises That are Beneficial,” and the major lesson, “Better Car Care.”
Others present were Ina Abendroth, Carol Austin, Kate Jennings, Rosemary Owen, Mary Smith, Una Tish and Leona Wright.
Women’s Civic Club
A salad supper and membership drive was held by the St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club the evening of April 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church parish hall.
The 17 present included guests, Kay Breer of Teutopolis and her daughter Mary Lynn of Effingham, LaVonne Kramer of Brownstown, and Shelia Himes and Loretta Heischmidt of St. Elmo.
After the meal, Kay, a master gardener, explained the program and handed out sheets with photos of native perennial plants. Native perennial plants are being encouraged by gardeners, because they use less water, are bug resistant and require little work.
Mary Lynn has been a quilter since 1997. She passed around samples of her quilting, especially showcasing patterns that she is learning in a class in Shelbyville.
Her quilts are done on a small machine fixed on a large table.
After the meal, President Pat Porter presided over the meeting that was opened with the pledge of allegiance and the club collect.
The club’s budget includes $300 for the high school Scholarship Fund and it will be given to the fund in April.
It was voted on to keep the 2010-11 slate of officers for the 2011-12 club year.
The officers will be installed at the May 6 meeting.
When the books were made for the 2010-11 club year, the May 6 meeting was set for the Vandalia Depot, but, because the Depot burned, another restaurant had to be decided on.
The May 6 meeting will be held in the Vandalia Ponderosa meeting room at 6 p.m.
Those attending are to meet at 5:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church parking lot to carpool.
The room was brightly decorated in a spring theme. Pastel napkins and placemats were used, and Gerbera daisies were the centerpieces.
The daisies were given as door prizes to Susie Belden, Shannon Engeljohn, Marilyn Sproat and Elizabeth Stoner.
In addition to the door prize winners and Pat Porter, the other members present were Karen Denning, Norma Engeljohn, Debbie Hough, Libby Kessel, Lucille Koeberlein, Mary Myers and Ann Rowland.
Extension Meeting
at Effingham
Home and Community Education members of four counties were invited to an Extension meeting the evening of April 7 at the Helen Matthes Library.
The group of about 20 who attended included five from Fayette County: Flo Allen, Panzi Blackwell, Shirley Klitzing and Phyllis Pryor of the Sefton Unit and Joyce Moore of the Wheatland Unit. Others were present from Effingham and Jasper counties. Clay County wasn’t represented.
Those present divided into smaller groups from the offices the held.
Rachelle Hollinshead, the Fayette County director, will move to Effingham on July 1 to be over the four counties that will become a unit.
It was talked about maybe having an advisory board meeting twice a year, with two from each county being on the board.
Also discussed was that all the HCE lessons will be given over Telenet, and there may be just three given each year.
