• St. Mary’s Catholic Church Council of Catholic Women will host the Effingham Deanery with a Mass at 6 p.m. A meeting will follow the Mass, and the St. Mary’s CCW officers will serve refreshments.

Saturday, March 12
• The Clothes Closet is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon, weather permitting. Winter clothes are selling for $1 a bag.
Sunday, March 13
• Daylight Saving Time will start at 2 a.m. Set your clocks ahead one hour.
Monday, March 14
• Free Developmental Screenings for children ages 3-5 will be held in the St. Elmo Elementary gym, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Written parental permission is required. Call for an appointment at 829-3263.
• St. Elmo Lions Club, 6 p.m., Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
Thursday, March 17
• Vit-Em-In Class potluck will be held at noon or 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church.
Future Announcements
• The defensive drivers course sponsored by the St. Elmo Lions Club will be held Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23, at the St. Elmo Christian Church, across from the St. Elmo Foods. Those attending have to be there from 8 a.m.-noon each day for the eight-hour course. Those wanting to attend can call Mona Stanley at 829-5437.
• The St. Elmo Parent Teacher Organization will have the annual PTO auction the evening of Saturday, March 26.
CCW
The Council of Catholic Women met the evening of March 1 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church parish hall. President Ann Rowland opened the meeting with prayer and all joined her in giving the pledge of allegiance. Roll call was answered with “What is your favorite spring flower?”
An Effingham Deanery meeting is scheduled for Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. There will be Mass at 6 p.m. St. Mary’s CCW will be hosts, and the officers will serve refreshments at the meeting that follows the Mass.
There will be no spring dinner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Cards were signed to be sent to the ill. It was decided to send a donation for the post-prom to the St. Elmo and Brownstown schools.
Hostesses Natalie Stout and Lisa Niemeyer had a St. Patrick theme and served shamrock iced cookies, pistachio pie, mixed nuts, mints, coffee and lemonade. The door prize, a table runner with a St. Patrick theme, was won by Ann Rowland.
In addition to the hostesses and Rowland, those present were Karen Denning, Mona Durbin, Loretta Heischmidt, Lucille Koeberlein, LaVonne Kramer, Mary Myers, Pat Porter and Carol Rine.
Women’s Civic Club
At the St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club meeting held the evening of March 3 at the St. Elmo Public Library, the Beecher City Kitchen Band entertained. There were eight lively musicians that played keyboard, homemade kettle drum, washboard, harmonica, birds, fiddle, frying pan/spoon, traditional claves and mandolin.
The ladies ranged in age from 72 to 93. They started playing 15 years ago “just for fun” and have played at the Illinois State Fair. They used to march in parades, too. They played for 40 minutes non-stop.
January and February hostesses Peggy Stolte, Shannon Engeljohn, Noma Moore, Mary Myers, Neva Carter and Marilyn Sproat served refreshments in a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Served were assorted cookies, nuts, candies, lemonade and tea. The door prize of a pretty bowl of mints was won by Debbie Hough.
A short business meeting followed the refreshments.
Those present were Susie Belden, Neva Carter, Karen Denning, Norma Engeljohn, Shannon Engeljohn, Debbie Hough, Libby Kessel, Lucille Koeberlein, Pat Porter, Ann Rowland and Peggy Stolte.
Fayette County HCE
The Fayette County Board of Home and Community Education met the morning of Feb.28 at the Vandalia Extension Office, with the following present:  Flo Allen, Panzi Blackwell, Shirley Klitzing and Phyllis Pryor of the Sefton Unit, Dorothy Harpster of the St. Peter Unit, Karen Denning of the St. Elmo Unit, Karen Hyde of the Wheatland Unit, and Irene Reed and Mary Smith of the Wright’s Corner Unit.
A charter member of Home Bureau/Homemakers Extension/HCE, Helen Shelton of the Wright’s Corner Unit, died in February. Two others also have died since the June annual meeting – Ruby Thompson, another charter member of the Sefton Unit and Jean Reeter of the Vandalia Day Unit.
HCE Get-Acquainted Day will be held on Thursday, April 14, at the Brownstown Golden Years building. Registration will be at 9 a.m., with a potluck brunch served at 9:30 a.m. The speaker will be Susie Koberegky of Highland. To display Southern women’s role in the Civil War, she will wear various types of vintage clothing and tell about the articles.
Following the speaker there will be the Bake It, Make It, Sew It, Grow It annual auction. Those attending are asked to take items for the auction, and each unit is to take a $5 door prize.
Committees appointed are as follows:  registration, Wheatland Unit; beverages, Sefton Unit; arrange food on the tables, St. Peter Unit; in charge of door prizes, St. Elmo Unit; and cleanup, Bingham/Ramsey, Vandalia Day and Wright’s Corner units.
District Director Debbie Borries has announced that on Friday, April 1, at 11 a.m., there will be a luncheon in the Effingham U of I Extension Office basement to honor Allison Burnett of Scotland, the Associated Country Women of the World treasurer.
Effingham County will supply the casseroles and beverages, and Fayette County is asked to take cookies and/or muffins.
Fayette County is not having delegates to attend the annual IHCE State Conference in March.
After the meeting, Allen, Denning, Harpster, Klitzing, Pryor and Reed ate at the Vandalia Los Amigos.
Lions Club
The annual Lions Club-sponsored defensive drivers course will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22 and 23, from 8 a.m.-noon each day at the St. Elmo Christian Church, across the street from the St. Elmo Grocery. Those wanting to sign up for the class can contact Mona Stanley at 829-5437.
The Diabetes Awareness Campaign is forthcoming, with the date to be announced later.
The annual Lions Club-sponsored Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Sunday, April 24, in the St. Elmo Community Park.
President Dave Maxey led the pledge of allegiance, and Richard Lowe gave the meal blessing for the St. Elmo Lions Club that met the evening of Feb. 28 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
Officer elections are forthcoming and were discussed at length with a nomination committee selected.
Also discussed were the final plans for the annual pancake and sausage breakfast set for March 7 at the Phillips Building.
Those present in addition to Maxey and Lowe were Don Crawford, John Crawford, Lewis Crawford, Pee Wee Denton, Roger Fulk, Bob Lowe, Charles Moore, Dee Newberry, Lloyd Stanley, Bob Wells and Randy Wolf.
Friendly Neighbors
Tables were beautifully decorated in a shamrock theme for the Friendly Neighbors monthly potluck held at noon March 1 at the Phillips Building. They were decorated by Paula Brunk of Brownstown. Larry Reed of St. Elmo set up the tables, but didn’t attend the potluck.
Others present were Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown, Mary Thomas of Altamont and MaryEllen Lovett, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, Marjorie Sarver, R. W. and Mary Smith, and Laverne and Leona Wright, all of St. Elmo.
There was a short business meeting and for the program, Owen read several jokes.
Wright’s Corner HCE
Those attending the Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education meeting held the afternoon of March 2 at the Loudon Town House wore green to observe St. Patrick’s Day.
They were Ina Abendroth, Carol Austin, Janice Garrison, Kate Jennings, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, Mary Smith, Una Tish, Helen Wright and Leona Wright. Pictures were taken.
Chairman Reed opened the meeting with all giving the pledge of allegiance. Roll call was answered with “The best thing about spring.”  Discussed were the Get-Acquainted Day set for April 14 and the April 1 luncheon that will be held at the Effingham U of I building to honor the ACWW treasurer from Scotland.
They signed three get-well cards for members who were unable to attend.
Jennings gave the February lessons, “The Incredible Lemon” and “Women’s Heart Health.”  Helen Wright gave the March lessons, “Aims of a Homemaker” and “Food Trends: Organic Foods.”
After the programs, Jennings served refreshments that included several recipes from her lemon lesson. She served fruit salad, confetti salad, poppy seed cake, lemonade, peanuts and candy.
Wheatland HCE
The Wheatland Unit of Home and Community Education met at Mary Ann’s Restaurant the afternoon of March 3.
The February lesson, “The Incredible Lemon,” was given by Ethelyn Williams, and the March lesson, “Aims of a Homemaker,” was given by Erna Koontz. Koontz also gave a report on spring jewelry.
Karen Hyde was hostess and decorated the tables in a St. Patrick’s Day theme. She read an article on the shamrock and the Irish. Served were pineapple upside-down cake, beverages and multicolored candies.
In addition to Williams, Koontz and Hyde, those present were Joan Aderman, MaryEllen Lovett, Vontella McEndollar and Marilyn Sproat, and a guest, Myrna Manley of Windsor.
