Mary L. Dixon, 79, Vandalia
Mary Louise Dixon, 79, of Vandalia, and formerly of Mattoon, died at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Ave. in Mattoon, with the Rev. Thomas Farris officiating. Burial will be in Findlay Cemetery. Mrs. Dixon was born on March 18, 1931, in Allen County, Ky., the daughter of Berry and Verte Stinson Doss. She married Clifford H. “Doc” Dixon Sr. on Feb. 14, 1948, in Bethany; he died on June 11, 1997.
She was the former owner and operator of Dixon’s Bar & Grill in Humboldt. She attended First Church of God in Vandalia, and was a member of the Mattoon chapters of the American Legion Post 88 Auxiliary and VFW Post 4325 Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge, both in Mattoon. She loved to quilt, sew, knit and crochet, and in her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo and cards.
She is survived by daughters, Linda and her husband Walter “Mack” Hampton of Edmond, Okla., and Patricia and her husband the Rev. Thomas Farris of Vandalia; son, Clifford H. Dixon Jr. and his wife Rebecca of Mattoon; brothers, Theron Doss and his wife Helen of Windsor, and Wallace Doss and his wife Rebecca of Mattoon; sisters, Lura “Betty” Bryant of Mattoon, June and her husband Leon Miller of Sullivan, and Joann Turner of Mattoon; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, five brothers and one sister.
