Edward M. Helle, 89, Vandalia

Edward M. Helle, 89, of Vandalia, died at 8:35 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Christian Church of Litchfield, with Pastor Steve Revisky officiating. Burial with military rites was in Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Honey Bend. Visitation was held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Christian Church of Litchfield building fund.
Mr. Helle was born on April 17, 1921, in Maplewood, Mo., the son of Edward and Gladys Scott Helle. He married Dorothy Feldman on April 11, 1971.
He was retired from General Motors in St. Louis, Mo., after 30 years, and was a member of Christian Church of Litchfield and United Auto Workers Union. He was a foster parent to approximately 100 children in the 1970s and 1980s. He served in the Army.
He is survived by his wife; son, Gary Helle and his wife Ellen of Fenton, Mo.; daughter, Janese and her husband Dorris McKinney of Catawissa, Mo.; stepdaughter, Connie and her husband Gearold “Jerry” Stine of Vandalia; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Helle; sister, Velma Pressley; and great-grandchildren, Anthony Whisenhunt and Jordyn McKinney.
