Fayette County Hospital to buy CT scanner

Fayette County Hospital and Long Term Care will soon order a new CT scanner to replace one that has been in use there for the past eight years.
“CT scanners have become great diagnostic tools for physicians to use to help diagnose patients’ medical conditions,” said Greg Starnes, FCH chief executive officer.
“The newer scanners on today’s market are faster than previous models. At a time when the media are expressing concern about radiation exposure that occurs during CT exams, the faster units reduce the time and, therefore, the exposure.”
The hospital will purchase its CT unit from General Electric for approximately $341,000, which was the lowest quote the hospital received.
The new scanner should be installed and ready for use within the next 90 days.
Starnes said that the hospital’s ability to purchase the CT scanner rests on its finances.
He said that the hospital had a net income of $90,000 in June, which was 65 percent ahead of budget. The profit for the first half of 2010 is $616,000.
“We must make money in order to spend money on improvements we want to make in the hospital,” Starnes said.  “Our hospital leaders have done a good job of controlling expenses, and we find ourselves in a much better position these days to invest in state-of-the-art technology that will provide more tools for our staff to use to provide excellent-quality health care.”
