Recycling continues to be popular in Fayette County
Since a recycling program was started last fall, the collection site has been changed several times. Area residents have stay attuned to those moves, continuing to show up in droves.
Figures released this week by Karen Sanders of the Fayette County Soil and Water Conservation District show that the recycling program is well-accepted.
Since the monthly collections were started last September, Sanders said, 24 tons of paper, plastic, cardboard, newspaper, magazines, aluminum and tin have been collected.
After holding collections at several locations, the Fayette County Recycling Committee has settled into a new home, Andy Craig’s warehouse facility on West Randolph Street in Vandalia.
Collections are held from 9 a.m.-noon on the second Saturday of each month, including one this Saturday.
In addition to the monthly collections, the committee continues to offer electronic recycling from 1-5 p.m. every Wednesday at the SWCD office at 301 S. Third St. in Vandalia.
Since the electronic recycling was started last year, the committee has received 14 tons of recyclable items.
That total doesn’t include two semi trailer loads of items that have not yet been weighed. That could add as much as 12 tons to the total.
The recycling collections are always manned by volunteers, and the recycling committee is always looking for individuals willing to donate their time for the collections. Those interested can contact Sanders at the SWCD office, 283-1095, ext. 3, or show up on the day of the collections.
Members of the recycling committee include Sanders and Tony Pals of the SWCD, Renee Willms, Mary Fulton, John Sanders, and Ginger Boas and Rachelle Hollinshead of the Fayette County Extension Office.
