Important issues in next Tuesday’s election

Don’t let the fact that all county officer and county board candidates are running unopposed keep you from going to your polling place next Tuesday.

For example, you can be a vital part of the process in deciding who will be on the ballot in the gubernatorial race – and in all statewide officer races – in the general election. The same is true for the state representative and state senator races in November.

It is a critical time in state government, and the primary election vote next Tuesday is the first step in determining Illinois’ path in coming years.

Fayette County voters will also be electing Republican and Democratic precinct committeemen.

And we will be among the residents of nine counties in choosing candidates for a judicial seat in the Fourth Judicial Circuit. The winner among the three Democratic candidates in the primary, including Fayette County State’s Attorney Stephen Friedel, will square off with Republican Doug Jarman, who was appointed to the seat vacated by the retirement of John Coady.

It’s an election that hasn’t drawn a lot of attention locally, but when you look at the overall picture, it’s one that is worthy of our participation.
