William R. Tarter, 77, Vandalia

William Rodell Tarter Sr., 77, of Vandalia and formerly of Fillmore, died at 1:55 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Vandalia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joseph Havrilka officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association, Fayette County Health Department Hospice and Vandalia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center activity department.

Mr. Tarter was born on May 28, 1932, in Johnson Township in Christian County. He married Luralene Joyce Engeling on Oct. 27, 1951, in Taylorville.

He was a retired dairy farmer, and a retired coal miner for Consolidated Coal Mine of Coffeen and Turris Coal Mine of Elkhard. He was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia, Farm Bureau, Knights of Columbus, United Mine Workers and National Mine Rescue Team, and served as a trustee for Mound Chapel Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife; sons, William Rodell Tarter Jr. and his wife Barb of Carlyle, Stephen Tarter and his wife Beth of Vandalia, David Tarter and his wife Kim of Alhambra, Mark Tarter and his wife Lori of Sigel, Jim Tarter and his wife Sheila of Belleville, and Jeff Tarter and his wife Melinda of St. Peters, Mo.; daughters, Susan and her husband Phil Jordan of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Diane and her husband Randy Straub of Vandalia, and Kathy and her husband Todd Ehrat of Vandalia; grandchildren, Jennifer Tarter, Bob Tarter and his wife Sara Beth, Amanda Tarter, Elizabeth and her husband Ross Etchells, Katie Jordan, Brooke and her husband Kris Franklin, Kristin and her husband Tyler Charlesworth, Tara Tarter, Travis Tarter, Tori Tarter, Connor Tarter, Taylor Tarter, Nick Tarter, Andy Tarter, Emily Tarter, Molly Tarter, Eric Tarter, Alex Tarter, Ben Tarter, Gabi Tarter, Sam Tarter, Sarah Ehrat, Zachary Ehrat, Owen Tarter and Drew Tarter; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Johnathan and Nicholas Franklin, and Ella Tarter; brothers, Harold Tarter and his wife Sandy of Mattoon, and Roy Tarter and his wife Mary Louise of Lisle; sisters-in-law, Betty and her husband Alfred Limper of Rochester, Patty and her husband Larry Mollohan of Taylorville, and Jo An Engeling of Taylorville; brothers-in-law, Deon Young of Irving and Raymond Engeling of Michigan; and his dog, Shasta.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
