John L. Hulskotter, 84, Vandalia

John L. Hulskotter, 84, of Vandalia, died at 6:23 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2010, at the family residence.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia, with Pastor Peter Kolb officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Donor’s choice.

Mr. Hulskotter was born on Feb. 16, 1925, in Vandalia, the son of John and Anna Stephens Hulskotter. He married Mary Lou Yarbrough on July 30, 1944, in Rockville, Md.; she died on Oct. 10, 1997. He married JoAnn Spenner on Feb. 5, 2000, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia.

He was the owner/operator of Vandalia Motors and J&J Leasing, and was a member of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Judy and her husband Charles “Shorty” Wasmuth of Vandalia, Kim Hulskotter and special friend Phillip Miner of Springfield, and Andrea and her husband Alan Goldstein of Albany, N.Y.; stepson, Alan Rothe and his wife Julie of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Jami and her husband Carl Berry, Mandi and her husband Chad Austin, Cori Mosley, C. Michael Hulskotter, Paul Rothe and Matthew Rothe; and great-grandchildren, Brenden Wasmuth, Quentin Austin, Sydney Austin, Garrett Austin and Isabella Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; son, Joe Hulskotter; brothers, Albert Hulskotter, Bill Hulskotter, Walter “Buck” Hulskotter, Butch Hulskotter and Pete Hulskotter; and sisters, Leona Schlitzing, Louise Belan and Norma Delong.
