Herbert H. Stewart, 85, Vandalia

Herbert Hewitt Stewart, 85, of Vandalia, died at 4 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at South Hill Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Loren File officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday and from 10-10:45 a.m. on Friday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia. Mr. Stewart was born on Sept. 25, 1924, in Vandalia, the son of Stanley and Georgianna Dieckmann Stewart. He married Mary “Adele” LaPlant in 1951; she died in 1984. He married Mary “Charlean” Evans in 1991.

He was a lineman for Illinois Power Co. for 38 years, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Vandalia, Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia, Veterans of Foreign Wars Old Capitol Post No. 3862 of Vandalia and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local No. 309. He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Kay Adele and her husband Edd Devall of Red Bud; stepdaughter, Phyllis and her husband Craig Hartman of Inverness; grandchildren, Ryan Devall and his wife Amy of Waterloo, Jason Devall of Red Bud, Erin and her husband Bob Heskett of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Nathan Devall of Manchester, Mo.; and great-grandchild, Bree Louise Devall of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; brother, Jack Stewart; and sister, Shirley Cochran.
