Darrell D. Filer, 81, Vandalia

Darrell Dean Filer, 81, of Vandalia, died at 10:24 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Taylor Cemetery in rural Vandalia, with the Rev. Andrew Whitten officiating. Military rites will be accorded after the service. Friends and family may gather at the cemetery at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 or Veterans of Foreign Wars Old Capitol Post No. 3862, both of Vandalia.

Mr. Filer was born on April 10, 1928, in rural Vandalia, the son of Rufus Calvin and Lillian Ruth Miles Filer. He married Virginia Joyce “Joyce” Manion on Oct. 23, 1954, in Corinth, Miss.; she died on April 18, 2007.

He was a retired farmer and carpenter, and was affiliated with the Baptist Church, Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3862 of Vandalia, Bond County Antique Machinery Club and Carpenters Union Local No. 634 of Salem. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by sons, Lynn Filer and his wife Dee of Vandalia, Marlin Filer and his wife Tammy of Vandalia, and Stacy Filer and his wife Jackie of Bolingbrook; daughters, Martha Tate of Vandalia, and Lisa and her husband Larry Rebbe of Vandalia; brothers, Miles Filer of Vandalia, and Ben Filer and his wife Marge of Lantana, Fla.; sister, Ferrel and her husband Stan Lowe of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son-in-law, Leslie Tate.
