Wal-Mart pulls request for liquor license

Wal-Mart officials notified the city of Vandalia that is not interested in a liquor license at this time.

In a letter sent to Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman on Friday by e-mail and FedEx, Harlan C. Powell of Webster and Powell, a Chicago law firm representing Wal-Mart, said, "It has come to our attention that while our customers overwhelmingly support the inclusion of packaged liquor goods among the many products offered by Wal-Mart, there may not be sufficient public support at this time to facilitate the approval of Wal-Mart’s request.

Wal-Mart officials notified the city at the beginning of this month that it was interested in a Class D license that would allow the sale of package liquor at the Vandalia Supercenter. The city council was scheduled to discuss that request, and receive input from the public, at its regular meeting tonight (Monday).

In an online poll conducted on www.leaderunion.com on that issue, 171 people said they opposed the sale of alcohol at the Vandalia Wal-Mart and 118 people favored the city issuing a license to Wal-Mart.
