Relay for Life is Saturday night

Each year, the people of Fayette County gather to remember relatives and family members who have been touched by cancer.

That gathering also has as one of its goals to raise money to help wipe out that disease.

It’s the Fayette County Relay for Life. And it is scheduled for this weekend.

Like previous years, the 12-hour relay will begin Saturday evening and run until Sunday morning. But this year’s event will start an hour earlier – at 5 p.m. Saturday – and conclude at 5 a.m. Sunday. Opening ceremonies will be held at 6 p.m., with the survivor lap at 6:30 p.m. and the luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m.

This year’s event also will include another change – a different location. After being held at the Vandalia Community High School track for a number of years, the relay will move to the Lincoln Loop Walking Trail, which runs through three of Vandalia’s parks. The majority of the relay activities and booths will be located along the walking trail in Rogier Park south of Fillmore Street.

Special events, entertainment and contests will be held at each hour during the night to keep things interesting. Live bands will be playing in the pavilion at Locust and Fillmore streets during the early evening.
