Jerry A. Rhodes, 79, of St. Elmo, died at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Friendship Manor in St. Elmo.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at First Baptist Church in St. Elmo, with the Revs. Les Atkins and Pee Wee Denton officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, rural Beecher City. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church. Kull Funeral Chapel in St. Elmo was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: The family.
Mr. Rhodes was born on Oct. 14, 1929, in Loudon Township, Fayette County, the son of Jimmy and Juanita Beck-Rhodes. He married Fannie Mae Jewell on Nov. 12, 1955, in Effingham, with the Rev. Clarence Phillips officiating.
He was a lifelong resident of the area. He had worked most of his life as a mechanic at A&H Implement Co. and Beccue Ford in Altamont, the Pete Stine Buick dealership in St. Elmo and King’s Garage in St. Elmo. He had also been a driver for the Mattoon area adult education program. He was a member of First Baptist Church in St. Elmo.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Jerry D. Rhodes and his wife Rhonda of Beecher City, and Dean Rhodes and his wife Cindy of St. Clair, Mo.; daughters, Helen V. and heer husband Richard Leverton of Springfield, and Jane Rhodes of Concordia, Mo.; brother, Doyle Beck and his wife Barbara of St. Elmo; brother-in-law, Edward Jewell of St. Elmo; grandsons, Floyd R. Bolyard, and Dustin, Jacob and Steven Rhodes; granddaughters, Dawn Leverton, Amanda Lahr, Courtney Rappold and Alyx Rhodes; great-grandchildren, William Lahr, Maddox Rappold and Elizabeth Rhodes; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jimmie Eugene Rhodes, in infancy in 1965; and granddaughter, Janice E. Rhodes, in infancy.
