South Central moved to 3-0 in Vandalia Holiday Tournament play Saturday night with a 45-40 win over three-time defending champion Wesclin.
The fourth-seeded Cougars thrashed No. 8 Shelbyville, 70-43, in its Pool B opener Friday and used a big second half to cruise past 10th-seeded Flora in its first game Saturday, 61-40.
They will look to clinch a spot in Tuesday’s title game for the second year in a row with an upset of top-seeded Greenville (3-0) Monday at 8 p.m.
The seventh-seeded Vandals (6-6) opened Pool A play Friday with a 56-46 upset of third-seeded Stewardson-Strasburg (7-2). They then topped sixth-seeded Central A&M in their first game Saturday, 51-44.
A valiant effort against second-seeded and undefeated Altamont came up short, however, as the Indians prevailed in Saturday’s final game, 57-46.
Meanwhile, the Vandalia girls basketball team opened play in the Mattoon Tournament Saturday with a pair of victories.
The Lady Vandals (12-0) started off with a 39-20 win over Mahomet-Seymour before topping a tough Flora squad, 40-31.
The Vandalia girls will take on Decatur MacArthur Monday at 10 a.m.
