The Fayette County Board decided on Thursday to delay a decision on who will run the county’s circuit clerk’s office when Marsha Wodtka retires at the end of this month.
Board Chairman Steve Knebel said that a vote on the issue has been delayed to give the Fayette County Republican Central Committee more time to submit its recommendation on a temporary circuit clerk. He said that the Democrat Central Committee has submitted its recommendation.
Wodtka has recommended that Mary Sue Ruot, a long-time employee in her office, be appointed to serve in the position until the November general election.
Ruot is the Democratic candidate for circuit clerk in November. She is being opposed by Republican Nona ‘Nonie’ Beckman.

Knebel explained that Fayette County Resident Circuit Judge S. Gene Schwarm has the authority, through an administrative order, to appoint a temporary department head after Wodtka leaves office at the end of July. That person would serve in the post until the county board makes an appointment.
