C. Raymond Kennedy, 91, of Pana, died on Tuesday afternoon, April 22, 2208, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Pana.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pana, with the Rev. Joseph Havrilka officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Pana Township. Visitation was held on Thursday evening, April 25, at Kennedy & Sons Funeral Home in Pana. Kennedy & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, with assistance from Howe Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville and Sutton Funeral Homes in Taylorville.
Mr. Kennedy was born on Saturday, July 14, 1917, in Shelbyville, the son of Dennis Joseph and Anna U. Hines Kennedy. He married Lucille A. Gudehus on Sept. 4, 1948, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Pana; she died on June 25, 1984.
He graduated from Sacred Heart School in Pana and was a member of the class of 1935 at Pana Township High School. He attended Millikin University in Decatur and was a 1941 graduate of St. Louis College of Mortuary Science.
A veteran of the Army inducted in 1942, he attained the rank of warrant officer and was assigned to the headquarters of Gen. Mark Clark in North Africa, moving through Italy and France during World War II.
Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Pana, where he worked as a funeral director and embalmer with his father and mother, and brothers Gerald F. and Eugene Kennedy in the familys funeral home business. He retired from Kennedy & Sons in 1995 and was awarded his 50-year certificate as a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1996.
Mr. Kennedy was a lifelong member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Pana, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Illinois Funeral Directors Association. He was a former member of the Pana Library Board, Christian County Housing Board, Pana Hospital Board, St. Patricks adult choir and Calvary Cemetery Association.
He is survived by a daughter, M. Kathleen and her husband Emil Litz of Decatur; sons, D.J. Kennedy and his wife Kathy of Taylorville, J. David Kennedy and his wife Tracy of Pana, and James Kevin Kennedy of Aberdeen, S.D.; grandchildren; Gina Litz of San Francisco, Calif., Andi Litz of Indianapolis, Ind., Stephen and Robert Kennedy of Taylorville, and Sarah, Sheila, Lucille and George Raymond Kennedy, all at home in Pana; and brother, Gerald F. Kennedy and his wife Luanna of Pana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Cyril and Eugene Kennedy; and sisters, Helen Godfrey, Mary Shea, Veronica Endris and Eleanor Kennedy.
