Dwight W. Buzzard, 87, of Altamont, died at 8:35 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at First United Methodist Church in St. Elmo, with the Rev. Alice True officiating. Burial will be in Crum’s Chapel Cemetery, rural St. Elmo, with military rites accorded by Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7676. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Geiseking Funeral Home in Altamont and one hour before services on Thursday at the church. Memorials: Lutheran Care Center in Altamont or donor’s choice.
Mr. Buzzard was born on July 7, 1920, in rural Altamont, the son of William Curtis ‘Curt’ and Nellie Rachel Watson Buzzard. He married Anna Mae Hardiek on May 28, 1954.
He was a retired farmer and previously was co-owner of the Effingham Bowling Alley and Brownstown Implement Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in St. Elmo, Effingham American Legion Post, Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post No. 7676 of Altamont, and St. Elmo and Effingham country clubs. He was an avid bowler and golfer. He was a Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
He is survived by his wife; sisters, Helen Shelton of St. Elmo, and Cleo and her husband Ken Schroeder of Normal; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Buzzard of Urbana and Lamina Buzzard of St. Elmo; brother-in-law, Bernard Goodson of Albuquerque, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ward and Forrest Buzzard; and sister, Lila Goodson.
