Vandals finish 7th at Hickory Stick
The Vandalia High School golf team opened its season with an eighth-place finish at the Hickory Stick Invitational in Wood River.
Vandalia shot a 373 as a team in the fourth annual event at Belk Park Golf Course, and was led by junior Zach Schaal, who finished 18th with an 18-hole tally of 88.
Freshman Richie Well was the second-place finisher on the Vandals, shooting a 90 to finish just outside of the top 20, and he was followed by senior Jake Shulman’s 94 and junior Jake Bowen’s 101.

VANDALIA – With half of the team lost to graduation, Vandalia’s high school golf team has a much different look to it this fall.
A much younger one at that.
Five freshman are joining two returning juniors and one senior this fall as the team looks to again finish in the top three in the South Central Conference and make the sectional tournament as a team.

VANDALIA – After two straight winless seasons, the Vandals want to change the trend.
And that first win may come very early in the season.
Vandalia hosts Pana in the season-opener next Thursday, and then hosts Southwestern on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Pana, a second-year program, beat Vandalia, 3-0, last season with a senior-laden roster, and Southwestern’s program is in its first season of existence.
Tennis insider: New coach to lead Lady Vandals
VANDALIA – For the first time in 18 seasons, a new face is at the helm of the Vandalia Community High School girls tennis team.
Dana Kern will begin her first season as head coach of the Lady Vandals on Monday against Roxana, replacing Kevin Schroeder, who resigned from his position after last season, citing family reasons.
Kern – a VCHS Athletic Hall of Famer, who made the state tennis tournament in her senior season – said she is excited to start giving back to a program she fell in love with when she was younger.

On Tuesday, the Jr. Lady Eagles fell to Mulberry Grove, 19-1.
Deana Shelton had a double and the team's lone RBI, while Dana Shelton also doubled, and Makenzie Parkison, Fatima Viramontes and Audrey Reynolds each singled.
On Saturday, SEB went 1-2 at the Beecher City Tournament to place third among four teams.
The team’s lone win came against Beecher City, with a 10-3 victory in the final game of the event.
