About 50 to shave heads at child’s cancer benefit

About 50 area people have agreed to have their heads shaved as part of an event being held Sunday to fight pedriatic cancer.

The St. Elmo Fire Department is hosting the event for St. Baldricks Foundation, a volunteer organization that works globally to raise money for childhood cancer research.

The event is co-sponsored by MABAS 54 (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System), which is made up of fire departments in this region of the state.

The fundraiser at the St. Elmo Fire Station, which is also an effort to raise awareness about the No. 1 killer of children, begins with a ham and beans dinner at 11:30 a.m.

Beginning at about 1 a.m., about 50 volunteers who are part of this effort will have their heads shaved. That group of volunteers, which includes several women, are collecting pledges in return for having their heads shaved.

Since the inception of St. Baldricks Foundation in 2000, more than 46,000 people including more than 3,000 women have had their head shaved to help raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
