Ink Cap Tattoos: For a Love of Art
BY MARK HOSKINS
Humans have been inking their skin for millennia whether it be for cultural or religious symbolism or simply for artistic expression. Once considered taboo within American culture, tattoos have become common place in the 21st century. And now, one woman is bringing her love for the art of tattooing to downtown St. Elmo.
Elizabeth Rhodes is the proprietor and artistic drive behind Ink Cap Tattoos, which opened its doors last month in St. Elmo. Although she is just 24 years old, Rhodes has a plethora of experience in the field, having started tattooing at an early age, learning from her uncle.
“When I was little, I used to draw tattoos on myself, and I have always been fascinated with it,” said Rhodes. “It is really just a love of art. I’ve been drawing my whole life and I really just love all types of art whether it’s music, drawing, knife making, or just about anything.”
Rhodes began her tattooing journey with at-home kits. She began tattooing part-time at the age of 18, mostly working on herself and friends.
Rhodes has tattoos covering both of her legs and one arm. The majority of her tattoos, she did herself. When asked about the stigma surrounding tattoos, she explained that the art form runs in her family. “Everyone in my family had tattoos, so it was kind of natural for me. You could say my family likes to decorate.”
As with just about every art form, each artist has their own style. Rhodes explained that her style is formed from traditional Japanese-style tattooing. She has several dragons on herself. “That is really what I personally am into, but I can do just about anything when I am tattooing someone else.”
Rhodes recently received her license and certification for bloodborne pathogens, which is required to work in a registered facility in Illinois. The shop has been inspected by the Fayette County Health Department and is certified through the state of Illinois.
Currently, Ink Cap is only offering tattooing, but with plans to expand in the near future into piercings.
Ink Cap Tattoos is located at 407 N. Main Street in St. Elmo. Elizabeth is currently working on an appointment basis. To schedule an appointment or a consultation, contact her at 217-240-1436.
