Bernadine ‘Bunny’ Smith, 86, Altamont

Bernadine “Bunny” (Coleman) Smith, 86, of Altamont, passed away on March 9, 2022, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont. Memorials: Ballard Nature Center, Meals on Wheels or donor’s choice. Bunny was born Monday, July 22, 1935, in Paxton, to Charles E. and Christie (Rodgers) Coleman. She married Hubert Smith on May 7, 1951, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2019.

Bunny worked for the Effingham County ASCS office for more than 30 years. She also helped her husband, Hubert, manage their grain and livestock farm, along with Bunny’s Berries, where they sold strawberries and blueberries from the farm.

Bunny will be remembered for her wit and bubbly personality. Her front door was always open and a visitor welcomed with a cup of hot coffee. Sunday dinners at Grandma Bunny’s were a weekly tradition the family cherished.

She is survived by a daughter, Sherry (John) Robertson of Altamont; twin sister, Geraldine “Gerry” Brown of Rienzi, Miss.; grandchildren, Brittny (Nick) Gipson of Dieterich, Beau (Stephanie) Morrison of Altamont, Chance Morrison of Altamont, and Cyrena (Daniel) Urbik of Olathe, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Logan, Owen and Jackson Gipson, Elizabeth, Quinn and Liam Morrison, Gemma, and Titus and Leo Urbik; brother-in-law, Lloyd Smith of Mt. Zion; and sister-in-law, Irene Smith of Altamont.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Melody Morrison; sisters, Charlene (Charles) McGuire, Nina (Bill) Brown, Helen (Curtis) Eiland, and Anita Coleman and brother, Cecil Coleman; sisters-in-law, Marie Bannick, Nadine (Lee) Antonides, Evelyn (Charles) Clagg, and Maxine (Frank) Belinsky, and Mary Ann Smith; brothers-in-law, Warren Smith and Earl (Shirley) Smith.
