Stephens resigns from Illinois House

Ron Stephens, who has represented residents of this region in the Illinois House of Representatives for close to three decades, resigned his seat on Tuesday.

Stephens, a 63-year-old Greenville Republican, has been serving as a state representative in the 102nd District, which includes all or parts of Bond, Clinton, Madison, St. Clair, Effingham, Fayette and Shelby counties.
One of the factors that may have entered into his decision to retire is the fact that the state’s new legislative map would put Stephens up against another incumbent Republican, John Cavaletto, in the new 107th House District in the primary election next spring.
Cavaletto announced in June that he will run for the 107th District seat.
Stephens, a self-employed pharmacist, served as a state representative from 1985-91 and again from 1993-present. He has served as the House assistant Republican leader.
He served in the Vietnam War, and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
The GOP chairmen in the counties within the 102nd District will decided who will serve the remainder of Stephens’s term, and news reports state that they were scheduled to begin discussing the process by phone on Wednesday.
