Primary filing began Monday

Races in the spring primary election in Fayette County began forming on Monday as the filing period for that election got under way.

Those filing nominating petitions at the start of the first day included three candidates for county clerk recorder, and two candidates for sheriff.
Candidates for county clerk and recorder filing petitions on Monday included Republicans Barb Schaal and Vicky Conder, and Democrat Kelly Taylor. Taylor is currently serving as chief deputy under the current county clerk and recorder, Democrat Terri Braun, who will not seek re-election.
Sheriff candidates who filed petitions at the start of the day on Monday were Republicans Bruce Brown and Chris Smith.
When candidates of the same party seeking the same office file petitions at the same time, a lottery is held to determine which candidate will have the top spot on the ballot.
Thus, two lotteries will be held next Tuesday at 9 a.m.
One lottery will determine whether Schaal or Conder will have top ballot spot in the county clerk and recorder race on the Republican side.
A second lottery will determine whether Bowen or Smith will have the top spot in the sheriff’s race on the Republican side.
Also filing petitions on Monday were the incumbent county treasurer, Rose Hoover, and the incumbent supervisor of assessments, Republican Cindi Lotz.
The filing of petitions for the spring primary continues through the end of the day next Monday.
