Rotary Club Hears Early State of the City from Doug Knebel

At the May 27, 2025 Rotary Club meeting, President-Elect Pat Click introduced the week’s program speaker, Doug Knebel, who presented an early “State of the City” address to the club. With a few recent city conference meetings under his belt, Knebel provided an insightful overview of current developments, upcoming projects, and the city’s financial standing.

He began by sharing that the city’s fiscal year budget was passed at last week’s meeting, and the financial health of the city remains strong—thanks in large part to the responsible planning and stewardship of the previous administration.

Knebel discussed several new efforts in business and economic development, including a consulting agreement with Todd Thoman and the reposting of the Economic Development position. With 10 current applicants, the city hopes to fill the role by August. He also announced plans to reinstate the Economic Development Commission to ensure local business voices are included in future planning.

In tourism, the city is looking to restructure and expand the tourism committee and is wanting to seek new members. Similarly, the Planning and Zoning Commission is considering a structural evaluation—possibly consolidating with other efforts to streamline long-term goals.

Knebel also referenced the city’s 2017 strategic plan, which was grant-funded. He stressed the importance of reviewing the plan regularly to ensure the city remains on track with its goals.

Two major infrastructure projects were highlighted:

-The “Safe Routes to School” sidewalk project, nearly four years in the making, is nearing completion.

-The Water Treatment Plant project—currently estimated at $26 million—is expected to break ground between late June and early July. This will be the city’s largest undertaking and a major investment in the community’s future.

Knebel closed his remarks on a positive note, reflecting on the significant investments being made throughout the city and the momentum building for future growth.
