Vandals win sectional; six advance to state

The Vandalia boys track team, with coaches Dustin Jackson and Jamie Keck, are pictured after winning the IHSA Track Sectional at Altamont.

Vandals advancing to the IHSA Boys State Track Meet this week are, from left, Jackson Wimberly, Lucas Bowers, Paddy McDowell, Jay Keck, Ian Whitehead and Kohnor Depew.

Six Vandals advanced to the IHSA Boys State Track Meet as Vandalia won the IHSA Sectional at Altamont last Wednesday.

A member of the Brownstown/St. Elmo squad also advanced to the state meet.

One of the six Vandalia advancers, Kohnor Depew, again broke the school records in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs in winning both events.

Depew also advances as a member of the 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams, both taking first place.

Other advancers include:

• Jackson Wimberly, pole vault (second place)

• Lucas Bowers, high jump (second place)

• Jay Keck in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays

• Paddy McDowell in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays

• Ian Whitehead in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays.

Whitehead also came just a hair from winning the 400-meter run. Results have Whitehead tying with Mason Byers in a photo finish, with sectional officials ruling that Mason won the event by 1/3,000th of a second.

The Vandalia coaches appealed the second-place outcome with IHSA officials but that appeal failed.

Trenten Monnet of Brownstown/St. Elmo advanced to state by winning the sectional shot put. His winning toss of 16.70 meters (54 feet, 9 1/2 inches) topped second-place finisher Anthony Roley of Teutopolis (49 feet, 3/4 of an inch) by more than 5 feet.

The Vandals won the sectional with 92 points, with Cumberland finishing second with 78, and Casey-Westfield and Altamont tying for third with 73 points.
