James Lewis “Jim” Overholt, 81, Pana

James Lewis “Jim” Overholt, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Pana, Illinois on May 5, 2025.  He was born on December 28, 1943 in Pana to James H and Lillian E. Overholt.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela; daughters: Melanie (Daniel) of Geneva, Illinois and Rachel (Josh) of Olathe, Kansas; and son, James of Ballwin, Missouri.  He was a cherished grandfather to Juliet, William, Brooklyn and Wyatt.  Extended family members include K

atie (Ryan), Alex, Claire, and Jillian of Iuka, Illinois and Neil (Amy) of Vandalia.

A graduate of Pana High School, Jim went on to earn degrees from Millikin University and the University of Illinois College of Law.  He served his country with distinction in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard for 30 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.  His military service included roles as a fighter pilot, flight instructor, and international liaison in Germany and at the Pentagon during Desert Storm.

Jim had a distinguished legal career, serving most proudly as the State’s Attorney of Fayette County.  He also worked with the Illinois State Appellate Prosecutor and the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Jim was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Elks, and Eagles in Pana.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Illini fan.  In his free time, you could find Jim hunting or on the farm.

Above all, Jim will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family and his steadfast dedication to those he served.
