Rotary Club Hears Program on Health & Wellness From Local Nurse
At the April 8, 2025 Rotary Club meeting, Rotarian Chelsey Jolliff introduced her husband, Jacob Jolliff, RN, BSN, as the featured speaker.
Jacob is a registered nurse at the Federal Prison in Greenville, Illinois, where he was recently asked to lead a diet and exercise class for staff at the institution. He shared a sobering statistic with the group—correctional officers have an average life expectancy of just 59 years, largely due to health complications stemming from high stress, poor diet and sedentary lifestyles.

During his presentation, Jacob explained how much of the health advice Americans rely on—such as the food pyramid—is based on outdated data. With obesity rates continuing to rise, he emphasized the need for modern, individualized approaches to diet and wellness.
Jacob encouraged members to focus on what works best for them personally, rather than chasing the latest fad diet. “Consistency is key,” he noted. Studies show that sustained effort, rather than any particular diet trend, leads to better long-term health outcomes.
He also shared a practical tip: instead of counting calories daily, individuals can track their food and activity for just three days every two months. This practice helps recalibrate our understanding of portion sizes and activity levels, since most people tend to underestimate how much they eat and overestimate how much they move.
Jacob concluded by reminding the group of the importance of continuous self-improvement—whether in our health, our professional endeavors, or our personal lives.
