Kenneth Lynn Evans, 92 of Decatur and Vandalia

Kenneth Lynn Evans, 92, of Decatur and Vandalia, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Ken was born September 6, 1931, in Chicago, the son of Henry “Lynn” and Rose (Petella) Evans. He proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Suzette” Brooks on June 19, 1954. Ken retired as yardmaster with Illinois Central Railroad after forty-two years of service. Ken and Suzette designed and built their vacation home on Lake Vandalia in 1972 where many fond family memories were made. After retirement he worked for Huff Lumber for eight years. Ken enjoyed traveling and attending all of his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting and school events.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife of nearly seventy years Suzette, daughters Elizabeth “Lynette” (Jeffrey) Hinz and Amy Banning, grandchildren Brook Banning, Katie (Jeremiah) DeForge, Megan (Matthew) Galligan, Betsy McKeever, and Holly (Jannick) Hansen, and great-grandchildren Audrey Banning, Sebastian Massie, Evan Lane, Madeline Galligan, Romy Hansen, Eliza Galligan, Emersyn DeForge, Ellie DeForge, and Helen Hansen, nephew Dan (Cindy) Borger, niece Debbie (Rick) Rudolph.

Ken is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Rosemary Borger.

Ken was a devoted and caring husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious laugh and competitive game play. Ken was the rock of his family. He always lent a helping hand and never expected anything in return. He was admired by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 PM on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Calvert & Wikoff North Chapel in Decatur. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 18, at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that you make contributions to the Audubon Society or the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
