A Hitchiker’s Travelogue

Rotarian Chuck Hutson’s Feb. 27 program took his fellow Rotarians back to 1977, when he and a friend hitchhiked around the USA. They left Southern Illinois and headed to Boise, Idaho, and traveled around the West until they settled for quite a while in San Francisco, Calif. San Francisco afforded the travelers with many new sights, sounds, foods and people. Chuck’s first experience of dense fog, the hippie vibe of Haight-Ashbury scene and riding cable cars, as well as fast and tall elevators. Chuck worked a variety of “temp” jobs to fund his adventures and managed to stay on the road for 14 months. When someone asked Chuck why he took the trip, he quickly said: “To see something different.” Rotarian Chuck Hutson (left) is pictured with President Tyler Osborne.
