Eagles repeat as FNB MG Turkey Tourney champs

St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles team after winning the FNB Mulberry Grove Turkey Tourney
With his team down by 10 points at halftime, St. Elmo/Brownstown coach Greg Feezel told his players that the championship game of the FNB Community Bank Mulberry Grove Tournament was not going to end in a loss.
Feezel was right, with the Eagles outscoring South Central 12-6 in the third quarter and 16-7 in the fourth quarter to repeat as the tournament champions with a hard-fought 42-37 win.
Father McGivney defeated the host Aces, 76-39, in the third-place game; Cowden-Herrick defeated Ramsey, 61-50 for fifth place; and Lebanon defeated Mt. Olive, 63-40, for seventh place.
“We just didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half, but the kids were working hard,” Feezel said.
“I told them, ‘You have got another gear, I know you have it somewhere; you’ve just got to find it,’” he said.
“We had a little chit chat at halftime. Well, they didn’t talk much, but I did.
“And, I told them, ‘This is not the way this is going to end,’” Feezel said.
“I said, ‘We’re going to pick it up all over the floor and you’re going to play 60 minutes, and whatever happens, happens,” he said.
Feezel lost his top two three-point shooters last year to graduation, and he said, “Trust me, those two players are sitting over there in the stands, and I thought, why couldn’t I have just one of them.
“And then Colin (Maxey) hit a three.
“Cade (Schaub) was not having a good ballgame, and he knows it. I kept telling him, ‘You’re next shots are going to go in,’ that’s what scorers do.
“Finally, he buries a shot out there in a big-time spot,” Feezel said, “and it’s like, it’s a tribute to him and his kind of psyche.
“He’s down on himself and he still stepped up and shot that shot.
“He could have passed it up, most kids would have, but not Cade. He’s not going to do that,” Feezel said.
The Eagles’ coach said that he knew he was in for a game where patience would be key.
“When you play South Central, and Coach (Blake) Doehring is a great coach who’s fun to coach against, you’ve got to be patient.
“They’re physical, we were physical, but I didn’t think we were as physical as we needed to be in the first half,” Feezel said.
“And, we haven’t been there before, the sheer grind,” he said about not being tested in earlier tournament games.
“We got taught a lesson,” Feezel said.
“We needed that,” he said.
“I needed to see what we’ve got, I needed to see who was going to grab their shorts and come play for me,” he said.
“And, I found out … in a big way,” Feezel said.

Adam Atwood of Brownstown/St. Elmo was the tournament MVP.
