Allen L. ‘Smitty’ Smith, 87, Vandalia

Allen L. “Smitty” Smith, 87, of Vandalia, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at SBL Fayette County Hospital LTC in Vandalia, IL.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at First Baptist Church in Mulberry Grove, with Brother Doug Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with military rites by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95 in Vandalia and Brownstown VFW Post #9770. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church. Memorials: First Baptist Church in Mulberry Grove or Kids Ark. He was born May 14, 1934, in Fayette County, the son of Herman F. and Erma V. (Dooley) Smith-Browning. He married Joyce Alberta Ellis on March 4, 1955, in Mulberry Grove; she passed away on January 18, 2021.

He was a former mail carrier for U.S. Postal Service for 28 years, and owner/operator of Smitty’s Monument Lettering in Vandalia for 60 years; U.S. Army Korean Veteran; and member of American Legion Post #95 in Vandalia, IL and First Baptist Church in Mulberry Grove.

He is survived by: a son, Stan Smith and Julie, Memphis, Tenn.; daughter, Vicky Largent and Gerald, Vandalia; grandchildren, Sara Caldieraro and Keith, Heather Garrison and John, and Tim Largent and Tracee; great-grandchildren, Macy, Jase and Jenner Largent, Annly, Isla and Ellis Garrison, Nailah and Zailyn Farmer, and Bailey and Tyler Caldieraro; and one great-great-grandchild, Dominic Crump.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister, Meda Bingham.
