Gerald John Bernahl, 92, of Springfield

Gerald John Bernahl, 92, of Springfield, died at 7:53 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at his home.
Gerald was born on March 21, 1929, in St. Elmo, the son of John and Adeline (Moellenkamp) Bernahl. He married Johanna Hobisch on October 24, 1953, in Austria.
In 1948, Gerald was the first in his family to graduate from Altamont High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and met his wife during that time. Gerald worked for Fiat Allis as an assembler and repairman for 37 years and worked part time for JC Penney for 21 years. He was a member of the German Club D.A.N.K. and the Fiat Retirees Club. Gerald enjoyed gardening, loved to travel, and was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clarence; sisters, Erna, Ruth, and Ella; and son-in-law, John Heidinger.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Johanna of Springfield; daughter, Judith Heidinger of Pawnee; grandchildren, John (Elizabeth) Heidinger of Olympia, WA, and Heather (Stephen Badger) Heidinger of Middlebury, CT; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Aslan Heidinger, and Linden Badger; brother, Kenneth Bernahl of Altamont; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
Memorial Ceremony will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, with Pastor Stuenkle officiating. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
